The town centre itself has genuine Victorian and Georgian buildings along Long Street and the surrounding lanes, a legacy of the hat trade that once ran through here, with older sash-style windows on some of the shopfronts and residential properties above them. The surrounding estates, built mostly from the 1960s onwards, are more straightforward UPVC semis and terraces. Mancetter, just to the south, has a similar mix but with a slightly more rural feel, larger gardens and more exposure to farmland dust than the streets right in Atherstone's centre. The A5 runs close by too, and properties nearest it pick up more general road grime on the front-facing windows than those set back on quieter cul-de-sacs further into the estates.
